Richard Scott Blog - 24th August 2025

Monday was admin at The Church. I did manage to start varnishing a few wooden panels that are used for showers etc. Not much Studio work this week.

If you cannot find old style roof tiles, then make them.

Hendrik giving the tiles a coat of roof paint on top of the primer.

Getting there.

Even the inside roofs were showing signs of leaking. But there are all brand new now.

Tuesday and Wednesday were the same. Church, rain, varnish, admin, cook and repeat.

My office for one more week.

Waterproofing the old basin keeping it authentic.

Joseph and I discussing the new roof on Wednesday.

Wednesday was a great day with waking up to the rain on the tin roof.

I haven’t been waking up in the middle of the night for a while now. Yes waking up to go to the loo but not waking up to be on my phone at 2am.

So, it was nice to wake up naturally.

Joanne and I  have both been lacking some good exercise. We’re putting it down to winter and working a bit hard.

Winter does that to you in South Africa.

Nonetheless, I was off to the Church with Joanne. She dropped me off as she had a lunch date with Mrs Schneider.

I made the guys a big pot of Jungle Oats and we were all off painting and fixing.

I gave myself the week to finish off the outdoor shower roof.

It’s made from laminated marine ply screwed together with stainless steel screws and then coated in resin and fibreglass. The brick wall it sits on needs some attention so the rain can fall correctly, but Hendrik and I are getting there.

We’re thinking of removing the 4 inch glass side panel on the shower itself to let steam escape and also give you a somewhat outdoor shower experience.

I will run it past the boss today. (Today been Thursday as yes, I’m awake at 2am typing to you 😂)

Nonetheless, back to yesterday (Wednesday) where I also got to varnish all 4 of the wooden contraptions around the Church. From shower floors to frames for the old Church sign that hangs up outside.

Using a grinder like a saw, South African style.

A quick admin/sales meeting with Angelique and we were off to see Henry at his Sea Point gallery to check in and tell him about Angelique’s departure end of August as my sales and admin assistant,

Angelique is off to greener pastures as I also change direction in my career in what will be called a seminal moment in my biography.

Henry was in great spirits as always and it was great to see him and share his abundance of positive energy.

I also took Ezlyn along with me to chat to Henry.

Meet Eslyn. I need some new shoes.

Henry showing Eslyn the ropes. I need a haircut as well.

The ever happy Henry, owner of You and I Art Gallery.

Ezlyn is the artist I mentored at ORION ORGANISATION, who now paints full time.

Henry represents Ezlyn in Sea Point and in Johannesburg.

I am going to help Ezlyn take his art and career to the next level.

Details to follow.

After Henry, we were planning of popping in to see John at Hout bay gallery, but John was in Stellenbosch, so we headed back to the Church to discuss plans for an idea I have for Ezlyn.

I quickly made the guys some roast chicken breast on the bone with Joanne’s famous spicy roast potatoes before Angelique offered to buy me lunch at The Yard around the corner. They make one of the best pizzas in Cape Town and she wanted to try them after hearing she missed out on a staff lunch last week.

Next level Margherita.

After that it was back to work for an hour doing admin before Joanne picked me up and whisked us home.

I got stuck into taking some last minute photos for a catalogue Angelique was drafting while Joanne potted around the house.

The maids were here, and the house was nice and clean, and all the washing and ironing done.

Joanne had the left over salmon for an early supper while I cooked up some supper for the kids.

Thursday was no different this week. Church Church and Church.

We still haven’t painted the roof red yet due to the sporadic rainfalls, so we are focusing on the inside.

The plan is to finish inside this week and next and then get on the roof first two weeks of September.

We did seal up all the leaks on the roof when we started in June, so that’s great. Now the whole roof just needs that last coat.

I’m in great spirits and wide awake and excited about my life and art career.

For a while I felt like I was in a slump and I think agreeing with Danilo and taking on The Church renovation project for him and Sami has inspired me to find a new direction and start to enjoy my time better.

Difficult to explain in words, but I am sure you understand if you know me and also took on a challenge in your life.

So, I’m looking forward to the alarm going off soon, a nice cup of coffee and heading into town with my soulmate and love of my life, and yes, my beautiful wife Joanne.

Who gets to spend quality time with the person you so most want to be with.

I was looking at old photos of The Church on my phone yesterday and will post some before and after photos next week.

Friday was a work from home day. Joanne and I went through the art in the studio. I didn’t release there was so much good stuff. We got in a quick road run and then got on with Friday stuff.

I popped in the Woodstock brewery to catch up with Rob and Andre.

Saturday was the same. I worked on some new one off Joyride Hypnotic prints and Joanne potted around the house.

Saturday was also my moms 81st Birthday, so it was nice to video call her and wish her Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday MOM.

These are beautiful.

Printing out a print for Eslyn to graffiti it tomorrow.

Check this beauty out.

Here is the text I used to post to Instagram:

In September of 2017 I attended the Basquiat Boom for Real exhibition at Barbican, London, and again in Frankfurt in 2018. There was a lot of excitement at the London exhibition as Banksy had created a piece on one of the walls outside the Barbican. After attending the show and collecting numerous memorabilia like postcards and exhibition brochures, I decided to take a leaf out of Banksy’s book and create my own version of Basquiat’s man and dog in his iconic style. I pasted the memorabilia onto the canvas and the painted Basquiat’s famous figure with dog and then added one of my iconic girls, Tammy, on the top layer. It is like she is standing in a gallery looking at the painting in front of her.
I trust you like it just as much as I do.

Sunday was the same, I made some pickled vegetables and Joanne potted again. I am thinking of photographing the Mervyn Gers vases today to catalogue them.

Road run done this morning as Joanne and I want to start running again 5 times a week. We are also off to see Angelina dance in Sea Point. Joanne came up with an idea to have a snack at Giovanni’s so we gonna get going shortly.

Thanks for reading.

Until next week.
