Monday we got stuck into fixing the Candy Wine Barrel piece. It had slight damage and was a bit faded.

I woke up early Monday morning and tried to take a photo of the blood moon as it was so spectacular. It didn't work, but the photo was very interesting.

There she is again.

Decided to sharpen all my pencils. Nice feeling.

Tuesday morning, I was craving beans on toast. So, I had that with HP sauce. It satisfied my craving.

I had a meeting with Denzil, a collector of my art from way back when. He has the biggest leather manufacturing plant in South Africa. Denzil gave me the tour of his plant. Very impressive. Then we caught up and discussed some ideas.

I was also experimenting with the Muizenberg pieces. There was some cut-out girls lying around and they landed up on the Muizenberg piece, so I decided to put some on the next pieces.

Richie popped in to drop off some stuff. He is moving up to Johannesburg to start his new career as a pilot with a commercial airliner. Proud dad. I made him and Laura my famous Toasted Cheese and we had lunch together and caught up.

Wednesday was maid day so I waited for them then headed out to Muizenberg to meet Angela and scout out locations to have an exhibition or event of sorts. Angela is the lady who started the Muizenberg Beach Hut Trust. I left Hendrik to load up some more wood while we went into various coffee shops and the likes to have a look see. Everyone loved the art and the idea of me recycling and giving new life to the old beach huts.

Decided to treat Hendrik to a nice lunch after all that hard work. Joons Pizza in Muizenberg. Delicious.

After that we headed home to offload.

I spent the afternoon writing up a nice story about the creation of the

BREAK GLASS BOX:

About 20 years ago, I conceptualised an artwork based on temptation.

The idea was simple: draw one of my artworks onto a canvas, then place the canvas, some paint and brushes inside a glass box as a kind of “Colour by Numbers” artwork. Everything you needed to complete the painting was right there in front of you.

You could break the glass and complete the painting, but in doing so, you would destroy the artwork itself.

You weren’t supposed to. That was the point.

Years later, in 2019, I visited Wiesbaden in Germany, where I came across a graffiti festival that inspired me to start my own Graffiti Series back in South Africa.

Three years later, while on site doing a graffiti installation, I spotted a red BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY fire box and suddenly joined the dots.

Why not take my original idea and reinvent it in graffiti form?
A spray can.
A stencil.
A hammer.

All locked behind glass.

You can break the glass, take out the spray can and stencil, and complete the artwork.

But should you?

And so, BREAK GLASS BOX was born.

I decided to produce just 47 editions.

Thursday I popped into town for the day to go see a few galleries. It started with WAZE telling us to take the Hi-Way and not the beach road. Both Joanne and I were nervous as it’s a dangerous road, especially at dawn. Nonetheless we made it safely to town and I dropped Joanne and settled in at SHIFT coffee shop and did some admin, email and WhatsApp catch up.

Then I was off running my errands.

I popped in to see Ian about the small bronzes. They were having trouble with the silicone and used a different type to get all the detail i wanted. Only this silicone got to hot when setting and melted this 3D Marquette.

I picked Joanne up and we headed home via the shops to get some supplies for the house.

I came up with the idea to make worm farms with the Muizenberg Beach hut wood. My computer friend came up with this design. Cute but not quite what I want. I will make on and show you next week.

Friday I finished off two more Muizenberg artworks and coloured in the bikini on the blue one. It made the piece POP.

I offered to help John, from Hout Bay Gallery, hang some art up in a client's house as his guys were all sick. It was great to spend time with him while hanging up art. The client is a big fan of my work and we had a great chat.

Good friends, good partners and good workers.

Saturday we cleaned up and made some yummy oven baked tomato soup and ciabatta toasted cheese for lunch as we were hosting our good friend Mark Copeland and Tania.

It was great to have some quality time with him.

Saturday afternoon Joanne and I did some work on our little venture together and then played backgammon and cards. It was to cold to play on the deck.

Sunday was a lazy day as well. A walk on the beach, light a fire, have a yummy Sunday brunch and chill by the fire.

Sunday foraging in the veggie garden. This is a huge fennel bulb we are gonna eat for supper.

We even grow Pawpaw in Melkbosstrand. Indoors only, obviously.

Chilly and Fennel Cold Slaw:

1/4 Cabbage

3 large Carrots

Hand full of chopped dill leaves

3 Table spoons of Mayonnaise

2 t Spoons Mustard

1 t Spoon Chilly

Salt, Pepper and Mustard Powder
