Richard Scott – Muizenberg Beach Huts

In 2025, I became involved with the Muizenberg Beach Hut Trust.

The Trust is a collaboration between public and private organisations, working alongside the City of Cape Town, to protect, preserve and celebrate one of Cape Town's most recognisable landmarks: the iconic Muizenberg Beach Huts.

When the original beach huts were dismantled, selected artists were invited to create artworks that were framed using timber from the historic structures.

In 2026, I decided to take the concept a step further.

Inspired by my Construction Series, I began creating artworks using the original timber itself, allowing the reclaimed wood to become part of each piece rather than simply its frame.

The Trust generously allowed me to collect a truckload of the original timber, giving these historic materials a new life through art.

Every weathered board carries decades of history, memories and seaside stories.
