Wooden Sculptures

In wanting to produce bronze and stainless steel sculptures, I first have to create an original from which to mold. I create the originals form Jelutong wood and them have them molded and cast. This lead me to produce wooden versions of my sculptures. I used European Beech and apply a coat of acrylic.

These pieces were long in the waiting as I tried to create a sculpture in the same, recognizable, style as my paintings. I initially carved the piece out by hand with limited tools. The final piece, was done with a fret saw and many hours of sanding and applying acrylic. I was inspired by the cats I paint and so well known for. I painted too many cats and now wanted to explore a new medium.

My paintings are renown for masses of flat colour and white and I wanted to carry this through to the wooden sculptures. Inspired by Terrence Carr's sculptures, I also wanted to bring out simplicity.

When I paint I use an impasto paste and I stamp my name on with a simple block I carved out. I decided to carry through my brand and carve my name in the side of the piece instead of scribing my name underneath, like most other artists.
