    Cat Sculptures

    Introduction
    Richard's Bronze Cat Sculptures have been 2 years in the making. From the original conception in 2002, until the final finished product in 2004.

    Richard wanted to create sculpture in the same style as his paintings; thick black lines, lots of contrast and colourful.

    The story
    Richard knew what he wanted to do but could not find the right method and tools to create what he had in my mind. After many months research, Richard purchased a fret saw; this was the answer. Each sculpture is cut out of a block of jelutong wood with the fret saw.

    Richard then approached many foundries who said they could not cast this piece due to its complexity. So he resorted to painting the wooden cats with acrylic. This worked well and the first three sold at the VEO exhibition in December 2003. The Lilac Cat was accepted into the Brett Kebble Art Awards 2003 finalist exhibition.

    Eventually a foundry was found who could help cast the piece in bronze. It took up to 12 months to get the final product after many trial runs with casting.

    Two silicone moulds are made, one for the outer frame and one for the inner cat. The two are joined at the wax stage and sent to the foundry for casting. Each cat weighs 9kg each. Weight was one of the elements Richard wanted in his sculpture.

    Once the cats were back from the foundry, they were individually punched with their name and number and sent off for powder coating, the final process.

    Editions
    There are 3 different cats;
  • My Cat (e.g.; My Red cat 1/7)
  • Cheeky Cat (e.g.; Cheeky Red Cat - 1/7)
  • Sitting Cat (e.g.; Sitting Red cat 1/7) (Still to be cast) Each of the 3 cats is cast and powder coated in 6 different colours; Red, Orange, Yellow, Lime, Blue and Purple.

    Each cat, in its 6 different colours, is editioned to 7. No artist proofs.

    Thus there are 3 cats x 6 colours each x 7, the edition.7 artworks
