Richard Has That Ring Of Confidence

A series of pictures drawn on a mobile telephone is in line to compete for the top honours in the Brett Kebble Art Awards.

MARS 2004, described as a "mobile phone, giclee print" by HOut Bay-based artist Richard scott, has been selected form more than 2000 works submitted by artists countrywide as a finalist for the awards.

Richard, a technical illustrator who turned full-time artist three years ago, works in a wide range of media, the latest edition being the mobile telephone.

"After drawing a picture on a Sony Ericsson P800 mobile phone, I decided to explore the medium," he said.

"Mobile phones are not designed to be canvases for artists," he said. "I just had to fine tune the idea and hold on tight."

The final work consists of the mobile phone with seven original drawings on it and a framed high-quality giclee print of each of the seven.

As a Kebble finalist, Richard is in the running for a R60 000 award in the New Media category or R200 000 for the overall top award in October.
