Richard Scott Blog - 13th July 2025

This picture popped up on my phone as a reminder from 8th July 2018. It's a photo I took when Richie and I went to Iceland with Andreas and Pete for two weeks.

Joanne and I have been meaning to give blood for a while. We missed our 6 week appointment as we were abroad, and things have been 1000 miles an hour since we got back. So, Monday it was going to be.

I drove the BMW into town and dropped Joanne at her office.

There was time for a quick coffee at SHIFT and a Macadamia nut milk cappuccino for Joanne.

Then I was off to the church for the morning to catch up with Hendrik on maintenance progress and some admin.

The Church was slowly getting there. It was the first day in 3 weeks that there was no rain and we could start work on the roof, so Hendrik got stuck into applying some cloth and sealer while I set up a heater in the lower bathroom to dry it out.

Then it was time to pop to the hardware and Pick n Pay for weekly supplies.

I got back, unloaded the supplies, made a cup of tea and got stuck into my daily 32 point “tick the boxes” which involves checking in with the kids and Joanne. Checking about 14 different parts of five bank accounts. Six if you include LUNO, a platform to trade with crypto.

Then I check all social media accounts, three WhatsApp reminder groups, five auction house results and a few health boxes like stretch and drink a glass of water.

Then I put the checklist aside and check my emails and the daily global news headlines. All this in one hour.

Then it was time to do some sales and project management on the small bronzes and the clay ceramic vases.

I have been neglecting the ceramics for two weeks due to wet weather and The Church taking up my time. So, as I sit here at 3am Wednesday morning typing to you, I decided I would pop in and go see the ceramics for an hour today and look see.

Back to Monday. After setting myself some new deadlines on the ceramics and bronzes I made the guys some yummy vegetable broth with oxtail stew on the side.

Pick n Pay had a special on oxtail. I couldn’t resist.

I enjoy cooking for the team as Napoleon once said, “An army marches on its stomach”.

Nonetheless I still had time to finish off some new sketches for Les at  Highroad Wines, for the limited edition Merlot he is producing for his granddaughter.

After our delicious lunch, I was off to pick Joanne up and go donate blood.

Joanne was out with Craig in Pinelands with a client for lunch, so I picked her up there and we headed to the Goodwood branch of the Western Cape Blood Services.

Photo of a photo. Joanne donating blood to save lives.

I got my complementary Western Cape Blood Services socks on. Hee hee.

Then it was home time, light a fire, cup of tea, catch up with the kids both locally and abroad and then we watched that 7/7 series on Netflix about the attacks in London in 2005.

It was ok, the kinda mind numbing stuff to put you sleep.

Joanne and I have switched to a nut based milk and are going through the 1 Liter cartons like wild fire. So, I decided to Google what to do with the cartons and someone was using them to etch on and print. Well, here is my first go. It does need a little practice.

Cat etched in and red ink applied.

Pressed onto paper. I need to add more red ink. But this was just a two minute experiment.

Tuesday came very quickly at 1am as Joanne woke up and the salmon bagel decided it was not going to stay down, so she was up most of the night with food poisoning.

She must have got that one piece of salmon.

I switched off all the morning alarms got lots of water, and she managed to fall asleep in the early hours of the morning.

I got on the phone at 3am and changed all the plans we had on Tuesday to Wednesday and also eventually fell back to sleep.

We woke up at 8am. Joanne still fast asleep I made a fire, some coffee and got stuck into my 32 point check list.

The rest of the day was like a Saturday.

Sending a client a photo of available graffiti on paper pieces in studio.

Joanne eventually got up and sat by the fire while I did some studio cleaning and creating five or so catalogues for the upcoming auctions.

With some of my magic vegetable soup, Joanne was up and about after lunch.

The day went quickly for me in the studio. I was in and out the house all afternoon and it was nice to have Joanne home sitting by the fire reading etc, albeit she was recovering from food poison.

We had a yummy grilled brinjal and rocket and tomato salad for supper and finished the London series and off to bed.

So now, as mentioned earlier in the blog, I sit here in bed and it’s now 4.15 am and time to catch a quick hour power nap before the 5.15am alarm goes off.

Richie took his grandad Len (my dad) for a flip in an aircraft while he was in the UK. So cool to see the photo and very proud dad. It was one of Richie's dreams that he made come true.

Wednesday was another Church day. I dropped Joanne, had a quick coffee at SHIFT while doing my admin and headed off to a small town 15 minutes from Cape Town called Athlone. Joanne had sold the BMW or rather traded it in, and I thought it was a good idea to give it one last service. BMW charge such exorbitant amounts for services that we use Faizel out in Athlone. He is good, reliable and affordable. I like him because he actually tells you what’s wrong and explains why.

Sending Angelina more SHIFT coffee photos. There is method to my madness, and you will see in the coming months what I am planning.

I got a lift back to the church with Angelique and got stuck into some maintenance work.

Bob the builder. Can't tell you how therapeutic this is. My dad use to build a lot when we were kids, and I got the hang of it back then as a kid.

Even Frans got stuck into doing what he does best.

My new office.

I had a 1pm zoom meeting with Grant in London to discuss moving emails to his new server. It was good to see him.

Then it was time to uber to Joanne and then to go collect the BMW and head home.

Photo of a 1m x 1m Orange tree I did in 2013. 12 Years ago. It feels like yesterday. I posted this image on Instagram as Joanne asked me to move the art around in the house.

Back of the painting.

Hanging on the wall.

Thursday was the same, town, coffee, admin, The Church.

I also went to go collect the WAP hi-pressure washer in Philippi that I had repaired.

Hendrik was like a kid in a toy shop when he saw it an immediately fired it up and started using it.

Hendrik Before.

After.

I guess like me and maintenance it’s good for the soul when you’re working with your hands doing something you enjoy.

Spotted this cool board Danilo must of put up when he did the renovations to The Church.

I made us all lunch and then had a 1pm with Mzukisi, a young artist I met through Gaynor Rupert’s charity Imibala.

He is very talented and came to seek some advice on various aspects of the art world as he was about to use his art and set foot into a world where I have spent 25 years of my life.

It felt really good sharing and advising. It made me even more happy than working with my hands.

Meet Mzukisi.

Then it was time to pick Joanne up and head home.

I did a bit of a catch up in the studio as Frans was in studio Thursday to help out with the up and coming SONGO annual charity auction.

Spotted these two lighthouse prints I did with Ignatius Marx in 2018.

I made a huge fire while Joanne potted about and made us supper.

My new favourite snack. Bread and Olive oil.

Friday was the big day. We were going to Paarl to trade the BMW in for a Toyota.  But first we had to pop into ButtaNutt Milk shop and get our ice cream. 2nd best ice cream in the world after lemon tops in Redcar England.

I decided to wash the BMW. before we dropped it off.

And Angelina's Suzuki while I was at it.

Angelina sent me a photo of here attending the Billie Eilish concert in London Friday night.

We were in and out with the car exchange as Joanne did what she does best and pre-arranged everything.

Then we were off home via the pot plant yard to look at some huge plant pots. Joanne and I are both craving fish lately, so we stopped off at the local fishery in Melkbos and got some takeaway hake and chips and enjoyed it on the deck at home.

Loving these cool pots.

Friday evening came quickly as Joanne, and I sat on the couch and chatted away.

We were in bed at 8pm

Not sure that was a good idea as it’s now 1pm Saturday morning and I’m wide awake typing to you.

Saturday we got up and did a hike up table mountain. We decided to do Cecelia Forest. It was very very beautiful.

And we are off.

Small waterfall.

Large waterfall. :)

We do live in a beautiful city.

Saturday afternoon was chill time. Joanne and I discussed going on our honeymoon which we still have not done. We want a beach holiday. So, if you have any suggesting please let us know.

On the way home we stopped off at Hout Bay Gallery to see Marika and Theresa. I spotted this cat I drew on the door way back when.

Sunday was a Sunday. Up late, road run, blog, eat but not cook as all the kids are on holiday or prepping for University.

Joanne is potting around the house while I check in on the annual SONGO Charity auction and keep the fire going.

Thank you for reading.

Until next week.
