Richard Scott Blog - 22nd June 2025

Monday was another public holiday for us in Cape Town. If I was the president I would have no public holidays. WTF.

Joanne and I still made it a working day, like we like to do.

We spent most of the day researching the auction markets.

I had a photo session with two newly coloured Joyride pieces and a few of the smaller “re-worked” Candy pieces. The candy works are older works from 2007 that I reworked. You know, the older pieces that are in my storage room that I’m breathing new life into because I’m a poor artist and can’t afford to buy new canvasses.  Just kidding, it’s more a case of my cleaning up.

I have noticed that older men wear New Balance. Did I fall into the trap? Also, whats with my right foot doing a tippy toe?

Very proud of my achievement. Believe it or not. These three pieces were once flowers and cats and and and. Now they are Candy Girls.

It is a great feeling to clean up and recycle these pieces and give them a new life and add to their story.

I only did one gold piece originally in this series. I could not resist.

Drying in the sun after a coat of Windsor Newton clear varnish to protect it. Hendrik responsible for the beautiful green grass.

Candy Joyride TWO.

Monday evening, Joanne and I made a stew. We were debating the ingredients and had to call my mom in as a judge. So, we had the correct recipe, and it turned out delicious. No peas!

Food photo time. It looks so good.

I woke up Tuesday morning and my body said, “you’re not getting up”. I’m not sure what happened but I only got out of bed at 2pm and wondered around like a zombie.

Joanne came home and I had some left over stew and was back in bed before the sun set.

Wednesday morning, I felt similar but decided to get up and head to town to do some clay work.

It worked. It seemed to clear my mind and relax me.

Me and my clay girls.

Wet spot.

If you know me well enough then the look on my face says it all.

I took the time to clean up the two new pieces I did last week and then start on draft 2 of the tiles.

I’m not sure where it’s going but I’m having fun and using up the off cuts of clay from the vases.

Want some tiles to tile your bathroom?

Tile kit: 3D prints of MY GIRLS, Clay and a Mallet. Water and a sponge helps as well.

Clay tiles DRAFT 2.

I managed to clean up the one vase nicely while the other needed very little attention as it was made correctly with the right age and thickness of clay.

Such a blessing.

So, the recipe is 13mm thick clay that has aged for 2 days. I sound like a butcher, or a chef, or a ceramicist.

Joanne said last week’s blog was a bit too much clay. I kinda left it all in as it’s what I’m enjoying at the moment.

With regards to clay: Initially I was in a hurry to get to the finished product, but as mentioned before, the laws of clay are different, and it is gonna teach me patience.

So now I take my time, and strangely enough things go quicker.

After all the fun I picked Joanne up and we headed home.

I checked in with the studio and planned the next day.

The kids had all written there final university exams so the mood in the house was less serious, and we could watch our Netflix with the volume at normal. As beautifully designed as the house is, one of the side effects of open plan New York style homes is that sound travelsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

Nonetheless Joanne spotted a new series of Somebody Feed Phil and we dug in.

Wednesday night I woke up at 11.43 to the neighbour’s dog barking. The pillows over my head didn’t drowned out the sound so I eventually got up at 2am to go see what was going on. Quite weird walking your own street at 2am with no one around.

No answer at the door, so I checked over the wall and the poor dog was standing there barking in the freezing cold.

I called the police so they could check for intruders. They were there in a minute, and they referred me to Emergency Services. I logged a call on behalf of the poor dog and climbed back into bed.

Joanne fell back to sleep and I’m sitting here still at 4.16am typing to you listening to the poor dog, in distress, still barking.

I just went through the photos of the week so far and edited them for the blog.

I’m gonna try get some sleep before the alarm goes off at 5.15am.

Thursday I felt normal again and headed back into town. I think it’s time to set up an office in either SHIFT coffee shop or Merven Gers Ceramic studio.

I parked the car, saw Joanne up to her office and headed for a sales meeting with Angelique and Chad.

It went well. The subject of my art sales keeps coming back to auctions and auction sales. It’s strange how in South Africa the general feel, in the gallery and client space, is that auctions are taboo. Compared to Europe and America where auctions trump the gallery space and are considered the primary market as opposed to  secondary market.

None the less I will persevere and lead the way as I do.

After a great sales session, the guys headed off to run some errands while I was off to my other office. I’ll keep the clay pics to a minimum this week.

Joanne finished off late. After picking her up we popped into “On the Rocks” fish restaurant near home in Blauwberg. We were both in the mood for fish. It was a beautiful setting with the grey green winter sea and rain coming in off the horizon.

We took the waiters advice and opted for the seafood curry pot.

Nomm nomm.

Then it was home in the rain for an early night.

I checked in with the neighbour about the dog and all was well.

PyroPunk posted this in IG. Uber cool.

Jan from Copenhagen, a new collector, posted this pic. Whoaaaaaa, next level respect.

And the famous Daniele Cafiso sent me this photo of his best friends place in Italy where Richard Scott stands proud. Those were his words :)

Friday, Joanne and I both worked from home. I managed to get a copious amount of admin done thanks to google sheets.

Saturday was movie and book day. Joanne finished a series she was watching, and I got stuck into Jeremy Clarkson’s Grand Tour.

Sunday was this first time we went for a run around the block in 7 weeks. With being away, it was rather difficult to run. But we aced it.

Joanne and I decided to update our profile pics. We always use the same photo. Hers is in colour, mine in Black and White. Our recent trip to Lugano. The love of my life and soulmate. I found you. YES.

:) SMILE

I also got stuck into some studio work, which for me is odd on a Sunday.

Look at this beauty. Whoaaaaaaaa.

Pink animals 1.

Dean and Chad took Joanne for a mother’s day Roller Skating gig as their mother’s day gift and time with mom.

So, I am sitting here Sunday afternoon, rain poring, fire going, and I'm gonna sign off so I can get some photos in studio for reference and planning the week.

Thank you for reading.

Until Next Sunday
