Richard Scott Blog - 25 May 2025

Monday morning was nice to walk in the forest around Climbach. Shombie and his wife  Anna took us on a nice long hour walk via some old German swimming pools in the forest from the 1920’s and an old pump house where it was the only place to get water.

Climbach is like Melkbosstrand, quiet and safe.

Climbach Town Church.

After that we set off to meet Count Karl Solms and his wife Celina for a lunch meeting. We were treated to a delicious traditional lunch in the garden of the Laubach Castle.

Signing the visitors book in the library with Karl.

Before lunch we got the tour of the library and the print room. I have never seen so many books or art prints in my life.

Lunch was Green Eggs and Potatoes, a traditional dish from the region. It was delicious. Boiled eggs cut in half with a secret green sauce and locally grown potatoes on the side.

Beautiful Sun and Beautiful People and Beautiful People.

In traditional German fashion the business discussions started mid lunch.

The plan is to host an exhibition in Laubach castle in 2026 or at their sister location; the Monastery in Kloster Arnsburg.

Then it was off to Kloster Arnsburg to scout the location for an exhibition. August met us there and showed us around.

Then it was time to head back to Climbach for a quick freshen up as we were invited to have supper with Andreas and his wife Anette in Limburg, 90 minutes away.

Best Friends.

Shombie cooking Andreas Nomm Nomm steaks.

We got up late Tuesday morning, because we could. Wolschy, Shombie and Anna wanted to show us Frankfurt.

Doing a walkabout.

Town Square with Shombie and Anna.

Lunch in the square.

Enjoying the sun.

Tuesday afternoon was chill on Shombie’s deck and catch up with the travels. We had a car to book as we wanted to drive to Munich and stop off on the way and experience Germany together.

Andy came to visit and invited us to his studio. This is his Richard Scott shrine.

Shombie and Andy chatting about art and sales.

Wednesday we were thankfully picked up by my good friend Wolschy and he took us to his house for a coffee and to show us his town Winner. He has done an amazing job of making his house super modern. You may remember Wolschy was the German Polizei Man who arrested me in Butzbach all them years ago – as a joke.

We said our goodbyes and headed to Europcar in Giessen.

And we were off. It took me all of 30 seconds to adjust my head to driving on the right. Joanne asked me how I did it and I explained that you kinda pretend you are driving upside down or in a mirror.

We booked a beautiful little cottage in the mountains of Titisee-Neustad, Waldau, on the edge of the Black Forest.

One the way getting some food.

The photo off the Airbnb site of our Cottage.

A photo we took in the rain.

The view from our balcony.

Another one.

We went out for supper at the local restaurant. It was very difficult to communicate as they did not speak any English, and their German dialect was difficult to understand, so we reverted to the English menu. I really wanted to fly under the radar, but you know you can spot a tourist a mile away in Cape Town, so I guess the same applies in Titisee-Neustad, Germany.

Asparagus soup for starter.

Spagel as main course. It is Spagel season.

A walk through the town. Cute water fountain.

After supper walk into the woods. I am not to sure if it is the Black Forrest.

Spending time with the love of my life.

Sending Hendrik a picture of the wood in Germany.

A view of the town from the hill.

Panoramic.

Not sure what this is, but we needed it to shelter from the rain.

Saw the local fire department doing drills.

Got the photo of the end of town.

Thursday we were up early and had a simple breakfast of local fruit and breads. Then we headed to Lochau near Lindau on Bodensee, or Lake Constance. We decided to go via Rheinfall in the north of Switzerland. Well, little did we know that when we crossed the Swiss border, the UK sim card would not work. Luckily WAZE was still kinda showing us the way. We when we got there we were in a slight panic and completely forgot to go see the water fall. We did see signs to the waterfall, but by then we had already made our minds up to track back and go find a shop and buy a Swiss sim card. 15 Euros later we were sitting in a coffee shop having some decent coffee with no luck on the sim card, as they were asking for the length of the grass I cut at home kinda stuff.

We rather connected to Coffee Shop Wi-Fi and punched in our next destination: Lindau via Schloss Schaffhausen and set the phone to OFF LINE mode and was hoping for the best. It worked.

The castle was so full of tour busses and tourists that we got the photo and did a U-turn to Lindau.

The house we booked was also not quite what the host had described. Se la vie as they say. The view, however, was spectacular over the lake. We drove into the local town and got some groceries and walked about a bit.

Our view over Lake Constance.

Walking the streets.

Art spotting. Quite cool, but not sure who?

Something you don’t see in South Africa.

Panno of the lake from the water’s edge.

Sunset in Austria.

Catching a suntan on a pebble beach.

Checking out the ferries in the harbour.

Friday morning, we set off to Munich. I put our destination into WAZE and selected “No Motorways”. It was a nice drive through the country side.

We arrived in Munich, dropped the car and Uber-ed to the Gallery. I was having a small showing at Soul of Afrika.

We had to drop our cases there because, yes you guessed it, the host of our AirBnB in Munich was running late and we could only check in at 5.30pm. Blah, it is what it is.

Travellers.

Finally arriving at the gallery.

Quick lunch with Jay at his favourite Chinese. You get to choose your own ingredients and then you can decide to have it as a soup or stir-fry. Very very very delicious.

Strange to think that humans built this.

We checked in, changed clothes and walked to the Gallery. It was nice to  meet all the Munich people and even got to meet three existing clients. We made two new clients as well who bought art.

The night went on till 11pm. Talking and telling people all about myself and my career. I met people from Spain, Mexico, Chilli and all parts of Germany.

Chatting to my new Mexican friend Armando Prado from Mexico.

Andreas popped in from Limberg.

Saturday morning Andreas picked us up and took us for a traditional Bavarian breakfast.  Boiled white sausage, pretzels, sweet mustard and beer. I found it fascinating that everybody had a beer in front of them at 9am in the morning. Andreas proceeded to tell us that Beer is officially consider a food in Munich.

The breakfast was great, and we did the town walkabout. Always great to do that with a person from that country.

Photos with friends.

My beautiful wife and I checking out Munich.

The local market and the amazing produce. This asparagus looks awesome. We did however eat some in Waldau 2 days earlier, if you remember.

50 different types of olives.

French cheese for sale. The small was amazing.

Bread like never seen before.

Horse meat butcher. It was surprisingly busy.

Walking again.

We said goodbye to Andreas and headed home to the flat to catch up with the family back home before we had to go back to the gallery for round two. Jay, the owner of the Gallery planned a meet and greet from 2pm to 6pm and then a party from 6pm onwards. We lasted till 10pm and decided to walk home from work exhausted.

Sending Andre, of Woodstock Brewery a photo of this famous Brewery.

Joanne getting me into thrifting.

Getting on my German. I actually like this jacket.

Meeting new collectors.

Sunday morning, we were, once again, up early and off to Lugano. I sit here right now on the bus typing to you.

Quick Sunday breakfast to finish off the food we bought along the way.

Trying the FlixBus. Cheap and convenient.

The bus is a really nice way to travel as you get to see the surroundings. However, the Munich bus station was an eyeopener with all the homeless people.

I will try post this from the Bus Wi-Fi.

Thank you for reading.

Until Next Sunday.
