Richard Scott Weekly Blog - 31st May 2026

Monday was payday. So, you know what I did all day. Or should I say what I did all pay-day.

David from Scoot Dr in Cape Town sent me a photo of their cabinet in the workshop.

Giovanni, from Lugano, sent me a photo of them "Watching the Giro d'Italia finish from home". Spot the r t-shirt.

Richie delivered the set of 10 x 2 small 3D prints for the small bronzes.

I was excited to get up Tuesday as I was going into town and meeting up with friends.

I did spend three hours at SHIFT espresso with my laptop and got to rework a chapter of my book. That part about resales and how and why. I must be honest ChatGPT is astonishing how it advises you on approach and writing style.

I didn’t overdo it with the coffee as I had a coffee date with Jacques Lagrange at 10. He was just in from New York on business.

It was lekker to catch up and share stories about our travels.

The Famous Jacques Lagrange.

I was running late as I had a lunch date with my good friend Mark Copeland. Mark just started a new job in the finance sector and suggested we try Pizza Shed in Bree street.

The food was good but the company was better.

Pizza with Mark. What a legend.

After lunch Mark introduced me to the team at work and his boss Luis.

We chatted art and finance and how they fit together.

I extended an offer for his team to come to my studio for the famous Richard Scott” studio tour.

Then it was  off to Tamboerswinkel for some more laptop work while I waited for Joanne. I decided to work on a new Richard Scott hard cover book that is long overdue.

Joanne popped out at 2.30pm and we went straight home. Joanne made herself a prawn salad while I did some work on two Road sign pieces in the studio.

I also finished off three 20 x 20cm candy girls.

The famous 10 x 10cm Candy Girls.

Wednesday was sit by the fire creating a new strategy with ideas and sales.

Hendrik did manage to glue all the pieces together for me on the large new bronzes.

So that was a relief that the process worked.

Compressing the sculptured layers.

It was rather cold and wet and the weather made me feel like I was back home in Pangbourne, England.

Joanne came home late as she ran a few errands. We had some leftovers and had another early night.

I’m reading a book by James Clear, called Atomic habits. It’s about very  small changes in your life, thus only ever so slightly adjusting your habits. Obviously, the bad  ones, or the ones that have a negative effect on your daily life. As you know we get up at 5am and by adjusting the time we go to bed has helped.

Someone turned 50.

Early Thursday morning I headed into town as I had a coffee meeting with a friend and collector Gert Viljoen.

Gert has a man cave office just off the side of the old Jason’s Bakery in Bree street which is now a Bootleggers coffee shop.

I have fond memories of that building.

Early in my career, around 2005, Charl Bezuidenhout, owner of Worldart Gallery, who represented me at the time, put two huge artworks of mine in the building. Back then it was the famous restaurant “Jardine’s” which was run and owned by George Jardine.

There were many rich and famous people frequenting Jardine’s and it was good for my career.

It was a great move by Charl.

There was a 2m x 2m Red Tree downstairs in the bar and a 3m x 1.5m upstairs in the main restaurant.

Nonetheless, after Jardine’s moved to Stellenbosch, Gert moved his offices into the building and I would go visit him and his business partner Jaco often and have lunch at Jason’s bakery. Jason's Bakery makes the best tomato soup in the world.

I was all caught up with Gert by 10am. Gert has always been a good sound board for me with his financial experience. We spoke business and art and charitable causes.

Lots of construction in Cape Town.

Then it was off to Mervyn Gers to chat to Denzil about colours for the ceramic vases.

I did a few more stops for studio supplies before I set up office at Woodstock brewery for a few hours.

I also popped in to congratulate Andre for winning “Best beer in Africa 2026” at “The Africa Beer Cup” awards.

It’s quite an achievement as the brewery was buzzing.

Well done to Andre and brewers Thinus and Ben.

I managed to do a mock up for a client and ticked all the small boxes in my daily diary.

Then it was time to pick Joanne up and head home.

We were both starving and I surprised Joanne by stopping at Maharajah restaurant, two minutes from her office, for a delicious lamb curry on the bone.

It’s was nomm nomm.

Joanne, the love of my life, my soulmate, best friend, and my wife.

We always share. Lamb on the bone and a good Chenin.

Maharajah is one of the top five Indian curry restaurants in Cape Town.

Then we headed home but first popped in to see some old friends and clients of Joanne, Sharon and Jeff in Sunningdale.

Sharon made us a cup of tea and some of her famous oat crunchie biscuits that taste just like my mom made them when we were kids.

Them home to a fire and an early night as our tummies were very satisfied.

Friday we worked from home in the morning. Joanne had a hair appointment and then we were off to Cape Diem Lodge for a business weekend with owners and friends Daniel and Bianca.

Friday Morning Instagram post.

Here is a screen grab of my Instagram account. You will notice that every day I am posting a "Circular Artwork". I am going to post one a day for 1000 days.

We checked into the lodge and Joanne had a surprise for me: A date day, a movie at the Labia. She booked the new Michael Jackson movie. It was cool to eat popcorn and watch a movie with my beautiful wife. Then we popped back to the Lodge, changed our clothes, as Joanne booked a new South Indian Cuisine restaurant “Sundoo” in Sea Point . We also tried the Lamb on the bone, and it was also delicious.

Then off home nice and early practicing our Atomic Habits.

Saturday I woke up at the lodge and had lodge business to do. After a great 5 star breakfast Joanne helped me photograph each room and super impose the Cape Diem Lodge artworks on the walls to present to Daniel and Bianca.

Here is the intro on the website which I will share with you soon:

Cape Diem Lodge

Richard collaborated with Cape Diem Lodge to repurpose reclaimed wood from a 2026 loft renovation, transforming it into a unique body of work.

The lodge was built in 1888, making the wood over 138 years old.

This series forms part of Richard’s ongoing Construction Series, where discarded materials are re-purposed into contemporary artworks with new meaning and life.

Then Joanne convinced me to have a haircut. We walked there from the lodge and discussed what life would be like if we lived in town. We could just walk everywhere.

After my haircut we walked to the waterfront where we met Daniel and Bianca for our first lunch at TANG. Nicky, the owner, treated us like VIP with the best seats and complimentary champagne.

It was great to see Daniel and Bianca and catch up. They loved the wall photos.

Us time while we wait for our friends.

Lunch with friends Daniel and Bianca.

Then we did a bit of shopping and took a walk back up to the lodge.

We popped into Mano’s for a Negroni before heading home for an early night.

Sunday was up early, breakfast, pack, and off home.

Time to read my book and chill.

Thank you for reading and viewing my blog.
